Mushrooms are edible

In India, lakhs of people are directly or indirectly dependent on
mushroom cultivation and is a source of their livelihood. Youth and
women are adopting it as an occupation. The country is now producing around one lakh metric tones of mushrooms annually.
Mushrooms with fleshy content is edible, and are non poisonous having desirable taste and aroma.
Not all mushrooms are edible, only less than ten per cent may be
edible. They belong to fungal species, and can grow either below or
above the ground. Mushrooms growing below the ground are known as hypogeous and above the ground are known as epigeous. Epigeous can be seen with naked eye and can be picked up by hand. Some times mushroom are wild, and in most of times they are harvested.
Wild mushrooms that can be edible should be identified to ensure
safety. Because in some individuals it cause allergic reactions.
Moreover old or improperly stored specimens can cause food poisoning.
Recent research shows that due to its anti-tumor properties and
capacity for stimulating the immune system, some species like shitake and oyster mushrooms could provide a powerful new weapon in the fight against cancer. They can also help to reduce side-effects from radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and improve the quality of life for patents in the advanced stages of cancer.
Many of them contain an amino acids, for example, white button mushrooms contain more protein than kidney beans. Shiitake mushrooms are good source of protein. Many are rich in unsaturated fatty acids, as well as the minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium, and in vitamin B, vitamin D, and some of them contain vitamin C in significant amount. The presence of complex sugars, namely polysaccharides are said to be enhance the activity of the immune system.
The market for mushrooms are growing and demand for it is increasing due to interest in their culinary, nutritional, and health benefits. It gives an opportunity for formers those who are interested in an additional enterprise as they can cultivate it in small scale production. It can also play an important role in managing farm organic wastes.
Mushrooms do not contain chlorophyll and depend on other
plant material for their food. At the same time, cultivation of mushrooms are labor intensive, and needs optimal temperature.

Restrict SUVs, save environment

Now a day usage of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) are increasing among youth as they are fashioning about these cars. At the same time, use of cheap and toxic diesel in personal cars also witness increasing trend. Both are harmful in concerned with pollution and are adding toxic contents to the surrounding environment.
Diesel related emissions are already very high in many cities across world. Compared to petrol cars, diesel cars emit more toxic particulate matter and nitrogen oxide to the environment. Both are key pollutants, and putting public health at risk. In turn, dirty air increases the medical bills of the innocent people.
Diesel cars emit 7.5 times more toxic particulate matter than petrol cars. That means, one diesel car's emission is equal to 7.5 petrol cars in terms of PM emissions and three petrol cars in terms of NOx emissions. Moreover, diesel cars’ toxicity becomes comparable with petrol only when they are fuelled with near zero sulphur fuel and are fitted with
particulate traps. The market is shifting towards the mid to large car segments, which was so far dominated by small cars, and large cars are generally less fuel-efficient compared to smaller cars.
As environment lovers feel, A 10 per cent increase in large vehicle sales can roughly consume an additional 17,500 barrels of oil annually, and in turn pollute the environment more. Considerable numbers of large cars are run mainly on diesel, and most SUVs are captive users of diesel. Both these undermines air quality. In countries like India ‘clean’ diesel (with 10 ppm of sulphur used with advanced after-treatment systems) is not available, and is adding additional burden on air pollution.
According to health experts, even at very low concentrations PM2.5 could cause health problems. An increase of 10 microgram per cubic metre would increase in health risks like asthma, heart damage, and lung diseases, and long-term exposure may cause lung cancer among public.
Immediate policy intervention from governments is the need of the hour. Governments should discourage big cars and SUVs by linking taxation to the actual fuel consumption of the vehicles. That means vehicles with higher consumption should pay more tax. Governments should initiate action to introduce ‘Clean’ diesel technology that runs on diesel fuel with sulphur content less than 10 ppm and is fitted with advanced emissions.

Lesson of my life

I am telling about one of my bad experiences which I have faced in my life. Nearly around three-four years back, I had a love affair with my girlfriend. Her name is Suchita. Both we were working in the same office.

In earlier days we used to share our feelings, life experiences and day-to-day happenings. Always we work together. Months went past, our friendship turned to love and we fell in love with each other. I even decided to marry her.

Her father was already in search of a groom, who measures up to his expectations. My bad luck, her parents were against my wishes and she got marry with another person. I was upset. I have lost my interest in life. Love disappointment affected my life severely. At one stage, I was intent on destroying myself.

One day I met one of my good friends and narrated my whole story. I poured my heart out in front of him. He suggested to read one book titled ‘Learn to live’ Written by Swamy Jagadatmananda.

That helps a lot for me. While reading I got will-power. I immersed myself in reading good books. Listened music, used to visit temples whenever I felt to need peace of mind. I concentrated in work which later helps to get success in my carrier.

I learned a lesson from this incident that the most important step to resolve any kind of problem is to accept and acknowledge its existence.

A butterfly flapping its wings in China could cause a cyclone in California

The classic version ‘A butterfly flapping its wings in China could cause a cyclone in California’, describes the fact that how a small, seeming unrelated happenings can have major effects on results in a chaotic system. For example if we take stock market movement, a small incidence in China can influence negatively in the stock market of California or elsewhere.

Stock markets are truly chaotic, and, fundamental stock analysis is necessary to understand the forces driving stock-price movements. Any action anywhere in the world can influence phenomena elsewhere as the butterfly that alters its usual pattern of pollen collection can create a different enough wind flow as to ultimately. In September 11, 2001, terrorists were attacked on world trade center in USA, the whole world was stunned. Stock market stumbled all over the world. It was not limited to USA. In the same way, recent economic slowdown which starts from USA gradually affects the other country’s economy.

Silent writer, Malgaokar

Manohar Malgaokar, who died recently was one of few proficient Indian writers in English. He was breathed his last in his home in the jungle village of Jagalbet in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka State. He left behind a trail of memories among the lovers of Indian writers in English.
Being a multi-faceted personality, he was involved in various activities. He was not only a writer, but also a great wildlife lover, an environmentalist, a crusader, a historian, a soldier in the army, an essayist, a game hunter, a mine owner and a civil servant. He epitomized the rural life in his novels as he spent whole his life after he completed his services in the
deep jungle as a security guard to protect the rich flora and fauna.
The author of acclaimed novels like 'A Bend in the Ganges'' that depicted life in the times of violent partition period and 'The Distant Drum' that gave an 'imprint' of the Indian Army during the days of the British Raj, has left a memory that is undiminishable among the minds and heart of his readership. Most of Malgaokar's activities were concentrated during the momentous times of Indian history before Independence and soon after it. The socio-economic milieu of those times form the backdrop of his novels which are usually of adventure and action, probably reflecting someway his own life.
Born rich, he was never attracted by the city culture though most of his education was in Mumbai. His experience as the
Lieutenant Colonel in Maratha Light Infantry during the second World War had given him rich knowledge and an impetus to write novels.
This seemed to be the reason why he wrote his first novel 'Distant Drum', at the age of 47, narrating the life of a soldier on the
battlefield and the spirit of the Indian warrior. He dealt with freedom struggle and pains of split in his novel 'A Bend in the Ganges'. It was 'The Prince' that brought him name and fame. Malgaokar's novels 'Combat of Shadow', 'Devils Wind', 'The Men Who killed Gandhi' were widely read by the readers all over the world. His 'Men in Uniform' was one of the best writings, apart from 'Chatraptis of Kolhapur'.
He also wrote a number of essays and contributed to various newspapers as long as he was able to write. Even at the age of 98
his vast reading habit was reflected in the rich library in his gorgeous bungalow in Jagalbet.
After losing his wife, Manorama, he continued to live in his solitary village house alone like a saint and continued his study of literature and forests. His love for social feelings was also deep. He never forgot 'down to earth' people. He was man who never aspired for publicity and preferred to live a solitary life. However, he never forgot the common masses and never took to any white colored people.
This was the reason why he is called the ''silent writer'' but very popular. After the demise of his wife, books and writings
were his only companions. Even then, he led a ''royal life'' in the deep villages of woods.

Way to Your top Choice School

With hundreds of thousands of applications receiving each year by colleges, and universities you may not get a chance to face a personal interview to present yourself as a complete package. But, you have a good chance to present yourself through your admission essay. Your college admission essay is the best way to your top choice school. Use this chance to highlight your true potential, and experience. It is your personal tool which allows you to distinguish yourself from the hundreds of thousands of other applicants with similar score and background.
A poorly executed essay may be resulted in rejection from the school administration. On the other hand, well written exceptional essay can help students with marginal scores get into the schools of their dreams.
The most engaging and compelling essay tells a story and have a clear focus. Writing should reveal student's passions and expose their personality. A clear narration of a difficult time in your past life tells far more about you than a list of competitions won and honors achieved. When you finish reading them, you will feel a tiny bit likes you met someone, maybe even someone you would like to meet again.
Just give a touch of humor to your essay. While it’s important to be thoughtful and mature, you do not want your college application essay to be too heavy. Try to lighten up the essay with a well-placed witticism, a clever metaphor, or a little self-deprecating humor. The essay that is filled with bad puns or off-color jokes will often end in the rejection pile. Overall tone of your essay is also very important. Take much care to balance your pride in your achievements with humility towards others.

Profit is important than ethics in business

Good business and turnover is very important for any company to make it success. Being a president of the firm he/she should took a good decision as his/her main responsibility is to promote the business. In a business profit is more important rather than ethics.
Here is one example. Marry had a graduation in general business, but she got job in accounts department. She used her father's influence to get the job in a firm. Watson, president of the firm gave her a job and paid high salary which didn't match her caliber. He hoped that his action would lead to future business from her father's company. Because, her father David, who is executive vice president of a firm purchased many of his firm's supplies from Watson's company. But she was irresponsible, and developed a pattern of coming late to the office, taking long lunch breaks, and leaving early. When a difficult job was assigned to her, she got one of the other employees to do it, implying that Watson would be pleased with that person if he or she helped her. When the department manager attempted to reprimand her, Marry would bring up the close relationship that her father had with the president of the firm. So manager was helpless. Watson had hired her because he hoped that his action would lead to future business from her father's company. So he didn't bother about her educational back ground, or caliber at the time of recruitment, and also shows generosity while paying her.

Restaurants demanding skilled labor force

Hotels and restaurants are of utmost importance for the nation's economy. Sector is a highly labor intensive service, and needs laborers in large number. A large part of the sector is closely
linked to the dynamics of the tourism economy. If we take it in terms of turnover, the sector accounts for more than 60% on tourist sector including both leisure tourism, and business travelling.
Restaurants, bars and cafes, Catering, and canteens are mainly the food service sectors and would
dominate both when it comes to employment and turnover. Customers/clients' base is depends on many factors like, quality, service, location of the establishments. For example, there are hotels
that people visit for the sake of their services, e.g., a reputable restaurant that cooks food from a locally-owned farm, whereas other hotels are popular because of the geographical location, e.g., at the
town center.
The Hotels and restaurants sector are now facing labor related challenges along with competition from other entrepreneurs. Shortage of skilled laborers, increased awareness of healthy lifestyle,
individualization in customer demands, environmental concerns are some of the other problems which the sector is facing.
Developments in technology like usage of Internet, and mobile service plays important role in the growth of the sector. The internet has dramatically changed the way hotels and restaurants market their services. Online booking, both directly at a restaurant's or a hotel's homepage and through new online based travel agencies, is one foremost example of new trends influencing and changing the value chain in the sector.
Food cost has a direct impact on a restaurants' operating profit. Along with this payroll related expenses like salaries, wages, taxes, and fringe benefit, overhead expenses like advertising, utilities, maintenance, other supplies excluding food costs play major role on profitability of the business. However profitability and operational costs depend on size of the outlet, and vary from region to region.
Sector needs the long term strategic challenges of increasing innovation, skills, and competencies, which make out the ground pillar of the sector's future growth possibilities, and increased its competitiveness. For example, older tourists/customers ask for more services. Customers may demand for new and different types of experiences and services. The increased usage of outsourcing like cleaning, cooking and booking services, in the sector also adds to increased complexity and volume of value chains.
Along with traditional value based factors like wellness, fitness, and healthy food, some other factors like demographical factors, modern life-style, implementation and usage of new technologies play
important role in the success of the business.
Government regulations are not same in all over the world. It differs with region to region. To start hotel or a restaurant licenses from the departments of local administration, health, electricity, water
supply and sewage board is required. Maintaining cleanness is very important. Food should be protected from cross-contamination at all stages such as during storage, preparation, holding, and display.
Usually hotels have been rated based on luxury, quality of service, facilities provided like entertainment, view, room variations, additional amenities, spas and fitness centers and location.
Getting finance to start/run hotels and restaurants are very important. Financing/ refinancing climate is always challenging, but with the right approach may not be as negative as many envisage. One
should prepare a detailed forecast, with full supporting data while explaining the market demand and supply dynamics. Refinancing is highly dependent on the performance of the property, the relationship with the bank, and that bank's particular view on lending to the hotel sector at present.
Usually, people do not cut down consuming or travelling, but they do it in alternative ways. Customers are somewhat concerned about comfort, safety, convenience, wellness and health issues. They may go for genuinely healthy lifestyles and holidays and seek more luxury and values. Multinational hotel and restaurant chains offering healthy and sustainable convenience will experience growth. But, in future the sector will experience a rapid increase in the demand for highly skilled labor.

'DABANGG', paisa vasool for Salman fans

Cast: Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Sonu Sood

Director: Abhinav Kashyap

Producer: Arbaaz Khan

The clash between good and bad is not a new subject for bollywood. Infact, many films based on the same subject hit the screen in the late 1970's succeed in box office. We can recall the scene of serpentine queues, and mad scramble to book tickets outside cinema halls where these types of masala films were screened. We cannot forget the fact that the hardcore masala films were relished with glee by the audience then. But over a period of time, these masala films were disappeared from the memory of the cinema lovers.

Up course, one more add to this category is definitely DABANGG. Basically it is an action movie, and action lovers can get lot of entertainment. It is a tangy masala film meant for the masses. Story is not a new one, and is old wine in a new bottle.

Salman acted superbly, and his fans' would not get disappointed. He succeeds to relish enough entertainment to his fans. Film already created a mass hysteria whiles crushing old records and setting new benchmarks at the box-office. Film has the Blockbuster wrote all over it. Salman Khan played the lead role of corrupt but good-hearted Chulbul Pandey. The whole film stands on three pillars. First one is salman's star power, second one is smashing stunts, and the third one is super music.

Story of the film is about a police inspector's fight for justice in his own corrupt manner. Story also tells about harps on the age-old mother-son and varied relationships. Chulbul is a fearless and corrupt police officer. He is working in his own unorthodox style. His childhood was little bitter. His father passed away when Pandey was very young. After that his mother married Prajapati Pandey. Dimple Kapadia acted in the role of his mother, where as Vinod Khanna is in the role of Prajapathi Pandey. Makhanchan is Chulbul's half-brother who born to Prajapathi and Chulbul's mother.

Chulbul decided to detach himself from his step-father and half-brother, when Prajapati favors Makhanchan which Chulbul does not like. Ultimately after his mother's demise that was his sole attachment, Chulbul snaps all ties with his family.

But when Rajo, role played by Sonakshi Sinha enters his life, Chulbul starts to see life more positively. He gets sensitized to the value of a family. But his detractors have their own vested interests, and try to spoil his life whiles putting one brother against the other. And, they used Makhanchan against Chulbul to carry out their own vested interests. When Makhanchan realizes the intention of the detractors, he turns to Chulbul.

We have seen so many similar stories in the past, but this film shines because of Salman's star power. The role gives him good opportunity to prove his star power, and he does it well. Salman's introduction and climax will send the masses in frenzy. S. Vijayan's stunts are superb. In music, Sajid-Wajid comes up with a melodious score. The title track, 'Tere Mast Mast Do Nain' and 'Munni', which is composed by Lalit Pandit are the plus point. Action scenes are outstanding. Up course, finale fight, and the climax is one prime reason for repeat viewing.

Mahesh Limaye's cinematography and editing by Pranav V. Dhiwar are perfect. Dialogues delivered by Salman Khan is greeting by fans with claps and whistles. Especially for the dialogue, 'Itne chhed karunga', fans become frenzy.

Heroine Sonakshi Sinha looks fresh, acts confidently and pairs off very well with Salman. She delivers the right expressions. Actions of supporting cast Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Anupam Kher, Om Puri are superb.

Salman at his 44 manages to create awesome onscreen chemistry with Sonakshi, who is almost half his age. He manages to pack in the punch, and delivers a power packed performance and goes all out to indulge his fans. As a whole DABANGG is an entertaining movie, and spectators gets enough entertainment for what they paid.

• Finally, identification of the local competition that may contend for the same customer base.

Look at targeted group for the proposed business, and draw comparisons between market conditions for the selected location. Teachers are the strength of the sainik schools

Sainik schools were established in 1960s by the government of India across the country, and were to serve as training centers for youth for entry into the armed forces. They are fully residential schools, and run on the lines of public schools. They provide all facilities for overall personality development of the students. NCC is compulsory up to class-XII. Medium of instruction is English, and they offer a common CBSE curriculum. But, English is not a pre-requisite for admission.

Sainik Schools are supported by central and state funding and committed to bring public school education to the common man and function as feeder institutions to the national defense academy. They are financially self sustaining institutions and collect fees from the students to meet their expenditure. Usually these designed for 525 students spread over from class-VI to XII. However strength of students may vary.

In most of the States sainik Schools are located in isolated areas. A campus life is totally free from linguistic, communal and social bias and is well insulated from the sordid strife and discord which bedevils student life outside. Admission is based on an entrance test comprising mathematics, language and intelligence for Class VI; mathematics, science, English and social science for Class IX, followed by interview and medical examination. All India sainik schools entrance examination is held by 10th of January every year.

A candidate to become teacher in sainik schools must be a graduate in the relevant subject and must have the B.Ed degree from a recognized university or an institute. Teachers are the strength of the sainik schools as like in any other school. They will identify talents in each student and nurture them. They have to guide the cadets, and trained them knowing cadet’s strengths and weak points. They give high standard education and knowledge to the students, and inculcate the confidence and encourage them. They will extend their help to the students in their projects.

In most of the times they guide the students both as teachers, and parents as these are the residential schools and parents were not allowed to stay with their children. They prepare the students to meet the challenges of life and mould them into civilized and better citizens. They help the students to identify their talents and develop it to the optimum. Well qualified and dynamic teachers strive hard to make the student successful in society.

Restaurant is a good business

When you think of starting a business, look at opening a restaurant or hotel as running a restaurant is a good business for new entrants. Most franchises in the food industry are seeming successful and in turn growing in numbers and popularity.
Food is an essential thing for everyone, and restaurants that serve delicious food can get popular within a very short span of time. Most of the people think that restaurant owners are people of high society that also comes with a touch of glamour. Usually people are eager to eat something at restaurants when they are hungry and away from home which is a major advantage for any startup company. Getting finance for a food operation business is easy as banks feel more comfortable approving the loans.
But, like other business, choosing a good location is more critical for opening a restaurant. So prospective investors should look at site selection very carefully before starting business. Restaurants, and hotels are easily vulnerable to fire accidents. So care should be taken about it before starting a restaurant business.
One more important thing about restaurant is maintaining cleanness as the health of the customers should be cared most. One should have made proper plan about waste disposal, sanitation, ventilation and ceiling for his restaurant.

Impact of FDI in Economic Growth of China

In 1978, China started an economic reform. The promotion of foreign direct investment (FDI) inflow is an important part of the economic reform process. After more than 30 years of economic reform, China has become one of the most important destinations for FDI.

In recent years, foreign-invested firms have become a very important part of the Chinese economy. Foreign capital has played a largely positive role in China’s economic development during the reform.

· It can generate more benefits than just helps solve the capital shortage problem.

· FDI may provide better access to technologies for the local economy.

· It can also lead to indirect productivity gains through spillovers. For instance, with the entry of multinational companies, competition increases in the local market which will force existing inefficient firms to invest more in physical or human capital. Usually MNCs provide training for labor and management which makes them become available to the economy in general.
· FDI inflow benefits China’s economical growth by inducing higher.

Nation has achieved economic growth at an impressive speed. External trade is now becoming very important element of nation’s economy which is the direct impact of economic reform. Expansion of its trade with the rest of the world is the direct outcome of reform. Gradual reforms of over three decades have transformed China’s economy from a centrally planned economy dominated by the state sector to a market-oriented economy consisted of firms with various ownership form. Government has encouraged technology transfer through various forms of foreign investment in the economy.
Positive impacts

· FDI leads to a fast increase in import and export trade in China. From 1985 to 2000, the market share of China in the international trade has increased from 1.6 % to 6.1%.

· FDI has created large number of job opportunities. It increased the employment rate in China. Creation of employment opportunities both directly and indirectly has been one of the most prominent impacts of FDI on the Chinese economy.

· The productive value produced by companies supported by FDI has occupied a higher proportion in the gross value of industrial output.

· When foreign-invested companies want to choose local companies as their distributors in order to broaden market channel or when their products are purchased by local companies as semi-finished products, they will build a backward industrial chain relation

· The coming of FDI has brought about severe market competition which forces domestic companies to perform technological reform to improve productive efficiency. As a result the investment of domestic companies has been increasing.

· The research and development activities performed by the foreign-invested companies have enhanced the technological spillover effects. Domestic companies may have increased the investments in research and development activities in order to gain competitive advantages.

· Urbanization has experienced an accelerated growth pace. Between 1978 and 2000, nation’s urban population had increased from 172 to 458 million. The corresponding urban population rose from 18% to 36%.
Negative impacts

· The rapid expansion of FDI has increased the risks of international balance of payments. The capital surplus brought about by FDI could make up the deficit in a short term.

· The long-term favorable treatments to foreign capital will lead to a spillover effect on the domestic capital. It may cause the scarcity of domestic investment demand. And that will make it hard to activate the civilian investment.

· The loose supervision has caused the lost of state-owned asset and has threatened the safety of China’s economy.

· FDI has modified China’s industrial structure. State-owned enterprises (SOEs) lost their dominance in industry sector. Their share fell from 65 % in 1985 to 25 % in 1997. Major gains in industrial structure were registered by private firms. Collectively owned enterprises became the most important category of ownership in industry.

· Regional disparities have increased as the FDI has been heavily concentrated in the coastal provinces. At the end of 1998, FDI firms’ urban employment was heavily concentrated (85.76%) in the eastern region provinces, more particularly in Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangsu, Shandong, Liaoning and Zhejiang, and the municipalities of Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin. In contrast, in the central and the western regions it was only 11.15%, and 3.09% respectively. It widened the income gap between the eastern and the western regions of China.

· Multinational companies have started to pay higher salaries for their employees. It put pressure on domestic firms’ to pay high for employees to retain their staff which exerts an extra burden on their revenue.

Invest your money actively

I think simply putting your money in savings account, or fixed deposits in banks is not the good idea to create wealth. Eventhough savings account or fixed deposits are safety, they are not the best home for your money.
Savings account earns you a mere 3.5% interest rate, a level that is fixed arbitrarily. On the otherhand, fixed deposit contractually fixes the rate of return at the start date of your deposit. You cannot earn more than what you signed up for, even if interest rates in the markets were to rise.
Most of the people put their savings in banks just for 3-3.5% interest rate. Some of them put in fixed deposits. But, they failed to understand that both are highly inefficient investment options for wealth creation.
Investment in shares, and mutual funds are more beneficial compared to bank savings and fixed deposits. Every investment instrument has pros and cons. In the same way investments in shares, and mutual funds also has own risks. Because, profit or returns for your investments depends on market risks.
There is a better chance of you being able to meet your long-term financial goals through equity mutual funds. Almost every one has one or the other goals like marriage, house purchase, taking care of children's financial needs, funding their education and marriage for which they require a substantial amount of money in the future. Or, some one can be planned towards their own retirement. Past experience from all over the world has shown that only savings from salaries are not enough to fund these goals. So, for all these you may need to invest into the capital markets, subject to your risk taking capacity.
By investing in share market, and mutual funds you can take an advantage of the compounding of capital. I.e., money that creates more money, and it allows for the systematic accumulation of wealth.
More over, savings accounts and fixed deposits are highly tax inefficient. Interest you earn through these will be taxable, and you will be liable to pay tax on this income.
At the same time, by leaving your money in fixed deposits, you will loose the purchasing power of that money. If you are already wealthy then fixed deposits might be a good wealth preservation instrument.

Health insurance co-ops are good option

In looking for better ways to establish affordable healthcare for all American citizens, discussions are taking place about the development of health insurance co-ops. In these days it is becoming a hot topic in the country. In terms of healthcare reform, health insurance co-ops, which would be developed by groups as small scale businesses, could be an option for those who need health insurance. For the people those who do not like the idea of the public insurance option, it may be the good alternative.

According to a Harvard Medical School study, 45,000 Americans die due to lack of health insurance every year because they cannot get adequate care. This number is the equivalent in number of deaths to a little more than one 9/11 disaster per month, year in, year out.

Non-profit health insurance cooperative could be third alternative to the traditional private health insurance and newly proposed public health insurance. Cooperative is the good idea to provide around 47 million uninsured and struggling Americans with an alternative to the private health insurance. The co-op proposal come in large part due to some challenges in generating widespread public and political support for a public health insurance option.

Advantages

· Health insurance cooperatives are non-profit organizations, and are neither run by government nor by companies.

· They have some of the strengths of public option in that they are able to give competition for the insurance companies. Moreover, it meets some of the objections from others who do not want a government-run plan, as they are membership-run and membership-controlled, not government-controlled.

· They represent thousands of members, so they have better negotiating power with providers, keeping costs lower than individual insurance company. Additional savings come from the absence of profit pursuit and their non-taxable status.

· Co-ops are driven by health interests of members, and is not beholden to shareholders.

· As non-profit enterprises, they would not have to worry about generating returns for shareholders. They could use that freedom to reduce members' premiums or put more money into improving care. Their primary allegiance and accountability are to that membership base and customer base.

· Having low administrative costs, their big focus is on putting the dollars into health care and not into administration. Being owned by members could make them more accountable to consumers.

Usually medicine has been a mix of state, non-profit, and for-profit actors and it’s worth broadening the mix of insurance options available to ordinary people. But, co-ops are a part of healthy non-profit, private, public health care mix. They accomplish same goal as public plan, and competes with insurers. One thing we need in the system is more competition. In the sense, they are a good idea as they give competition to for-profit insurance companies.

Health insurance cooperatives can generate an independent stream of revenues. This compares favorable against a government-run public insurance option, which is dependent on taxpayer funding and the whims of government budget allocations. In this sense, co-ops offer a good competitive alternative to private health insurance companies.

Co-ops can scale in a decentralized and community-focused manner. The model can work very well in filling the gaps left by the private insurance industry. And, in this sense, co-ops can compete well on a local level. Most important thing is that co-ops are more community-focused than large insurance companies.

In co-ops people like the small community feel. It provides more personal attention. Large insurance companies and bureaucracies lose their community feel very easily. In that scale at local level co-ops can compete more effectively with the idea that they are more community-oriented and it is very easy to deal with them.

Co-ops implement a more holistic, preventive approach. System emphasizes primary care medicine and preventive care which is a major contributor, especially in the time of skyrocketing health costs.

Co-ops are more political feasible than public insurance. The public plan is too contentious to pass. While it has significant support, it also has extremely fervent opposition. Passing it would create a near revolutionary-level of outrage. Avoiding this is important, and adapting a co-op model is a good means of doing this.

In co-ops members would feel in control. There is a sense of transparency. They are cooperatively governed. Members are eligible to vote in the organization, and they have a say in how to organize care and design benefits. Members could participate in reviews of grievances and in discussion about the benefits packages. Most of the work is done by the board of trustees that has elected by members.

Cooperatives can deliver high-quality care, and could do a better job of controlling costs than some of the inflationary models. Co-op model could be a manageable and efficient system, when the question of the cost of medical care arises. It could be a good compromise.

Air Pollution is decreasing in London

With increasing urbanization and industrialization, more pollution has been added to the air by industrial, commercial and domestic sources. When these concentrated gases like Co, Co2, So2, No2, Ozone, and Pm10 exceed safe limits, we have a pollution problem.

Air pollution is increasing in many parts of the world. But in London, air pollution is decreasing over the years due to several steps taken by the government. According to available data, concentrations of six pollutants reduced between 2007 and 2008. Between 1998 and 2008 concentrations of eight pollutants have reduced.

Cause for air pollution

The substances that cause air pollution are pollutants. If they are pumped into our atmosphere and directly pollute the air are called primary pollutants. Carbon monoxide from car exhausts, sulphur dioxide from the combustion of coal is example for primary pollutants. If primary pollutants in the atmosphere undergo chemical reaction, and further cause pollution, they are secondary pollutants. Photochemical smog is an example for secondary pollutant. Air pollutants mainly occur as a result of gaseous discharges from industry and motor vehicles. There are also natural sources such as wind-blown dust and smoke from fires.

Effects of air pollution

· Inhaling So2 in excess amount would lead to cough, tightening of chest, and irritation of lungs.

· NO2 results in irritation and inflammation of lungs.

· PM10 may cause inflammation of lungs, linkage of long term exposure to coronary heart disease and lung cancer.

· Intake of carbon monoxide in excess amount would leads to prevention of normal transport of oxygen by blood, resulting in the reduction of oxygen supply to the heart.

· Ozone causes pain on deep breathing, cough, irritation and inflammation of lungs. Benzene and 1, 3-butadiene leads to cancer. Lead is responsible for linkage of exposure to impaired mental function and neurological damage in children.

· Long term exposure to air pollution can shorten our life.

· Early exposure to air pollutants can slow down development and growth of the lungs in children.

History behind air pollution in Britain

Air pollution, particularly in cities, is not a new problem. Back in the middle ages the use of coal in cities such as London was beginning to escalate. In UK the industrial revolution during the 18th and 19th centuries was based on the use of coal. Urban air pollution levels often reached very high levels due to the burning of coal in industries, as well as in homes for domestic heat.

During foggy conditions, pollution levels escalated and urban smogs (smoke and fog) were formed. These often brought cities to a halt while disrupting traffic, and may also cause deaths. Effects of air pollution on buildings and vegetation also became obvious.

In the great ‘smog disaster’ in London in 1952, nearly 4,000 people died in a few days due to the high concentrations of pollution.

Decreasing trend seen

According to London air quality network, carbon monoxide has shown a statistically significant decline in annual mean concentration. Concentrations of six pollutants from environment agency regulated industries reduced between 2007 and 2008. Between 1998 and 2008 concentrations of eight pollutants have reduced, with lead (83%) and benzene (78%) showing the greatest reductions.

According to the data, there has been a downward trend in the annual mean concentration of SO2. Since 2000 it had fallen significantly. By the spring of 2009 it had fallen by 80% since November 1996. Annual mean concentration of PM10 has decreased by nearly 26 % between November 1996 and late 2008. The concentration of NO2 has fallen since 2000, and now appears to be stabilizing. The concentration of NOx has stabilized since 2005, and is currently around 40% lower than it was in November 1996.

2009 has seen a general improvement in air quality measures compared to 2008. Significant declines would be expected for pollutants whose primary source is transport because vehicles are replaced over time with models that emit less pollution.

Government’s effort

UK Government has taken several steps to minimize air pollution over the years.

In 1995, it has passed environment Act, requiring the publication of a national air quality strategy to set standards for the regulation of the most common air pollutants. Published in 1997, strategy has set commitments for local authorities to achieve new air quality objectives throughout the UK by 2005. It is reviewed periodically. But, some forms of air pollution create global problems, such as upper atmosphere ozone depletion and global warming. These are very complex, and require international cooperative efforts to find solutions.
